It’s all started by this blog post by an industrial engineering (TI-ITB) girl who exchanges some bad words with a boy from the informatics engineering (IF-ITB). This post has triggered discussion in the informatics engineering student’s class of 2001 (IF2001). The thing that interest me the most is when she said that IFers (IFers refer to all informatics engineering students) have an autistic disorder hahahaha … One of my IFers friend here also said that most IFers have autistic disorder hahahaha … And then come
Mr. Pinky Mr. Sam who also said about autism. Someone told him that he is “a bit autistic” (peace Mr. Pink Mr. Sam). So what is autistic disorder? I heard this term so many times but I never know the formal definition. This is where grandpa Google becomes very handy.
Autism is a brain development disorder that impairs social interaction and communication, and causes restricted and repetitive behavior.
Wow the definition is scaring me. So, without further delays, let’s examine this definition one by one to prove that IFers don’t have the autism disorder.
The first one is about social interaction and communication. Am I socially impaired in term of social interaction and communication? The answer for this one is definitely no. I wouldn’t let myself isolated from the community. That’s why I have the latest Yahoo messenger and Google talk installed in my laptop or PC. With both chat applications I can interact with people all around the world. If you don’t have it installed in your laptop or computer, there’s a huge chance that you are the one who is being autistic hahahaha … So, download and install it, OK.
Moreover, I interact with so many people through mailing list. I join so many mailing lists, even more than I can actually handle, which means that I interact with so many people and they come from all over the world. I also interact through communities that I join, for example Bali Blogger Community, Facebook or Friendster. So, who need to go to the bar or restaurant just to interact and to communicate with people? All I need is just turn on my laptop or PC, login and voila you’re connected to people from all over the world. From the explanation, we can conclude that IFers are not socially impaired on both aspect, communication and interaction
The second part of the definition is a bit tricky thing to examine. Am I doing something restrictively and repetitively? Let’s see my daily activities. First, let’s see my daily activities during my time in Mitrais.
First day of the week:
Wake up in the morning, take a bath, get some breakfast while watching TV, racing to the office, turn on the computer in the office, start coding (and chatting and browsing). Wow its 5pm already so time to go home. At home, get some dinner while watching TV, oowww crap, it’s the freaking sinetron again, so I turn on my desktop, play DotA until 1am, and then go to bed.
As we can see, there are no repetitions here. The only activity that looks similar is dinner and breakfast while watching TV, but the first one is breakfast while the other one is dinner. So we can’t say that they are the same thing. So let’s carry on and see day two of the week.
Second day of the week:
Noooo, I’m late. It’s all because of playing DotA last night. Let’s move move move. Take a quick bath, no time for breakfast today (or the office parking will have been being locked by the time I arrive at the office), racing to the office, turn on the computer in the office, start coding (and chatting and browsing). Wow its 5pm already so time to go home. At home, get some dinner while watching TV, but it’s the freaking sinetron again, but no DotA tonight or I will be late again. So, I go to bed early this time.
Well, after two days, we can see that I do different thing every day. In the first day, I had my breakfast while on the second day I didn’t. In the first day, I played DotA all night long, while on the second day I didn’t. I think this is sufficient to say that I don’t do things restrictively and repetitively.
So, I would strongly disagree with my friend, Anugerah Redja Kusuma (he’s one of the best programmer), when he said that most of the office internet are used for unproductive things, such as chatting, browsing, downloading music, etc just to keep us from being insane (or autistic). But I would rather see it as a proof that we communicate and interact with the world outside, proof that we don’t have autistic disorder. So, anyone who still thinks that IFers have autistic disorder lets discuss it in the comment section.
VIVA (NOT-AUTISTIC) IF 2001
See… how much does it cost just to keep your sanity in this kind of work (Anugerah Redja Kusuma)
